Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: Cerro Vista Farm is a 18-acre farm located in Taos County, New Mexico surrounded by 2,200 acres of pastures and alfalfa fields. The farm lies at 7,500 feet elevation, the lowest point in the vast San Luis Valley, with spectacular 360 degree views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Rio Grande Gorge, and of numerous massive, extinct volcanoes. Though the growing season averages only 85 frost-free days, the sandy loam soils and high mountain snow melt that irrigates the fields enable us to grow 40 different varieties of vegetables, flowers, grains, and beans which are sold through our 200-member CSA, at the Taos Farmers Market, and to local food stores and restaurants.

A full-immersion program in vegetable and flower crop planning, production, and marketing.
Educational Opportunities: "Interns who work the full season at Cerro Vista farm will learn how to profitably farm and sell vegetables on a 5-acres-of-crops scale. Specifically, all these farming skills can be learned: 1. Using tractors, rototillers, and hand tools; field preparation, incorporating cover crops, bed and stale bed preparation, hand and machine planting, hand and machine weeding, flame weeding; using tractor-mounted cultivation, transplanting, and harvesting tools 2. Transplant plug production: planning, propagation, and transplanting techniques 3. Drip and sprinkler irrigation techniques and equipment 4. Harvesting, bunching, packing, and storing crops for retail and wholesale markets 5. Selling produce in CSA, farmers' market, restaurant, grocery store, and school markets 6. Root Cellar crop production, harvest, curing, and storage 7. Vegetable seed production and processing 8. Use of fertilizers, cover crops, green manures, crop rotations 9. Three-season greenhouse production 10. Farm business bookkeeping, farm production planning, cash flow projecting, field mapping, CSA accounting, and distribution logistics.
Skills Desired: Workers with farming or gardening experience who can commit to the entire 26-week program will be given preference in the hiring process.
Meals: Interns will receive a CSA share of vegetables from 6/21 through 10/16. A vegetarian Lunch is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5/10 through 10/15. Interns will be responsible for obtaining any other food they want to eat and for preparing their own meals in the community kitchen.
Stipend: Interns will receive a salary of $250.00 per week, plus a $1,000.00 bonus paid at the end of the season if they work the entire 26-week season.
Housing: The farm will provide a 10' x 10' private cabin space for each intern or apprentice. Cabins have electricity and wireless high speed internet. Cooking and bathing happen in separate community buildings that are shared by the interns.
